Galatasaray general manager Omer Yalcınkaya expressed his optimism that if the NBA Europe launches then his club will have a spot in the competition.
Here’s what Yalcinkaya said to Anadolu New Agency:
“At the end of March, I was in Switzerland for the Final Four and Quarterfinal draw of the BCL. At that time, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis had just returned from a meeting with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in New York.
Zagklis told us that this project was now starting to take shape and that research would be conducted to determine a strategy. However, a minimum of two seasons of work is envisioned. Zagklis told us that NBA Europe would progress seriously. Frankly, this is a very attractive project for us. We have not received any offers yet, don’t get me wrong.
But this formation is exciting for European basketball and of course for us. If the NBA Europe project progresses with solid steps, we would be happy to be there. At this stage, of course, just as with the BCL, our communication regarding the upcoming seasons for the NBA Europe project continues.
New formations are always attractive and of course there may be some organizational problems at the beginning. However, over time, as it settles down, it will progress even further.
From what I understand, the NBA Europe is thinking of a total of 16 teams and will include basketball teams from 12 major cities. It will be an elite league with clubs like Manchester in England, Paris in France, maybe Real Madrid in Madrid. This league will be on a higher level than the BCL. So we can compare it to the EuroCup, EuroLeague, BCL and NBA Europe. I am excited about it and if the project goes forward, I think we will be there too.”
