When, after surviving yet another round of redundancies in a previous work, I did something really strange. I switched off the lights in my area and lay face-down on the bed, not able to relocate. Rather than really feeling alleviation at having left the axe, I was exhausted and numb. I’m not the only one. Apathy, exhaustion and hopelessness are all textbook signs of burnout, a stark sensation that has come to specify many of our working lives. In 2025, a record from Moodle discovered that 66% people workers had experienced some sort of fatigue, while a Mental Health UK survey found that a person in 3 adults came under high degrees of stress or stress and anxiety in the previous year. Despite the frequency of fatigue, plenty of mistaken beliefs around it linger. “Everybody thinks it’s some sort of condition or clinical problem,” says Christina Maslach, the psychology professor that was the initial to study the disorder in the 1970s. “But it’s in fact a feedback to persistent work stressors– a stress and anxiety action.” Right here we separate the facts from the myths.
