‘Not everybody can handle it!’ Discover the vulgar, unrelenting audios taking over Caribbean circus
At Notting Hill carnival this weekend break you’ll hear the noise of bouyon and dennery section, altered subgenres packed with sexualised lyrics. The designers discuss exactly how this deliriously enjoyable music went viral
At this year’s Fête de la Musique in Paris, British ravers that had actually streamed over to delight in the annual road event– believe Notting Hill carnival without the procession– found themselves hearing, and afterwards quickly dancing to, an extremely uptempo tune called Bouwéy.
Constructed from a languid vocal up in arms with clattering African percussion, the track bowled out from sound systems and automobile home windows, fairly unlike anything else: a specifying song of the summer season. Made by Guadeloupean act 1T1, Bouwéy has now hit 12m views on YouTube. Yet its frenetic speed and startling synth job have not gotten here in a vacuum– rather it is the vanguard of an audio called bouyon, part of a whirlwind of dance styles jumping out from the Caribbean to the globe, including at Notting Hill circus this weekend.
